Advent Memories No. 13: Christmas and the Arts

Christmas and the Arts

Did your family attend any special events or performances during the holidays?

Other than the school Christmas plays and the church Christmas pageants, our community in Alaska didn’t have holiday cultural events (it was a village of about 300 people).

When we moved to Northeast Washington, my parents would attend my high school band and choir holiday concerts. A much larger community than my Alaskan one, still to go to a holiday cultural event required a trip south to Spokane.

Here in the city, there are many holiday events, as can be expected: Broadway shows, The Nutcracker, the symphony, and various theater and other musical presentations. One of the newer events is First Night Spokane, which is held New Year’s Eve in the downtown area, and features a whole afternoon and evening with many performing artists in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. My children were for many years a part of the Willard Elementary Cougar Chorale, an award-winning children’s choir of 2nd – 6th graders, and were asked to perform at First Night about five years ago. This was an honor which the group was very proud of. After they performed, they had an opportunity to see other performing groups, and then stay for the firework finale. However, we went home early, as it was very cold out, and we also didn’t want to fight the traffic leaving downtown after midnight.

This post is a part of the “Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories” meme created by Thomas and Jasia. You, too, can write your own Christmas memories, either for your personal journal or blog. Click on their names for the list of topics. To see what others have written, go here.
